The legendary Commissar Cain finally joins Warhammer 40,000 with a glorious new miniature, and today we’re showing off his rules.

For all his self-professed cowardice, Cain is a figure of legend to his Guardsmen – the Hero of the Imperium – whose mere presence emboldens them to face down the most terrifying creatures in the galaxy. Such is their devotion that he doesn’t even need a regular Commissar’s Summary Execution ability.1

Jurgen’s presence is thoroughly welcomed2 when battle gets underway, as he packs his trusty meltagun while warding off psychic attacks and mortal wounds due to his nature as a Psychic Blank. You also don’t need to worry whether you’ve built him on Cain’s larger base or separately – Ciaphas Cain deploys as a single model regardless, and any separate Jurgens are simply treated as tokens.

Cain’s most defining ability is his Unparalleled Luck, which has seen him out of some truly hairy endeavours in the past. Whether it’s raging Chaos champions or overwhelming xenos firepower, the good Commissar can stick it out and weather whatever the galaxy throws at him. At least, for a single phase. Backup had better be on the way.

Alas, as we know, no amount of hiding, chicanery, or attempts at escape will prevent Cain from being in the wrong place at the right time. He’ll be on that battlefield no matter what, Trapped by Excuses3 until he inevitably pulls off another stunning victory.
You can get your hands on Ciaphas Cain and Jurgen when they go up for pre-order this weekend, alongside standalone releases of the Centaur RSV and Hippogriff AFV, and the new Illustrated and Annotated Edition of his seminal first novel For The Emperor by Sandy Mitchell.
Cain’s rules will be added to the Astra Militarum Faction Pack on the Warhammer 40,000 downloads page soon.
1. Cain, more than anyone, is acutely aware that trigger-happy Commissars tend to end up at the end of a ‘friendly’ laspistol themselves.
2. A rare occasion, admittedly.
3. The sheer regularity with which Commissar Cain appears in battles he would rather avoid would have some believe he secretly yearns for glory, if they didn’t know him any better.
