Inside White Dwarf 529 – Trick or Treat with Gitz and Skaven

October is just about upon us, and White Dwarf is joining the revels with a Halloween special dedicated to the creepiest and crawliest creatures in Warhammer.

If we had to include everything that’s scary in the worlds of Warhammer, this would be the thickest issue yet, so instead our top Azyrite agents have selected an assortment of eerie antics to chill your bones. Which is our way of saying, there’s a lot of spooky monsters causing a nuisance.

What could be more of a pain in the neck than the Gloomspite Gitz knocking on your door? Having caught wind of magical treats hiding within the ruins of a haunted town, an army of greedy grots has swarmed from their caves in search of sugary spoils, but they’ll need to contend with the equally conniving Skaven to make it home with a sweet hoard in October’s battle report.

What sounds like a simple task – knock on doors and get your candy tokens – is complicated tenfold by the various tricks that could get played on our intrepid gatherers. Rolling randomly on a 3D6 table each time you knock means you might end up with a burst of healing from Nagashizzar Eclairs, or you might just disturb a Revenant Draconith slumbering inside and die horribly.

Further in, White Dwarf gathers a vast gallery of suitably horrifying miniatures from around the Warhammer offices, showing off stunning work from a custom-built C’tan Shard of the Nightbringer to an army of Night Lords, and even a chunky JoyToy rendition of the Legion of the Damned that we just saw in the Big Autumn Preview’s Kill Team reveal.

While not quite in the spectral spirit, flesh-and-blood Orks are just as scary as any aggrieved apparition, and their barnstorming new Codex has put them on the front foot in the wars of the 41st Millennium. That won’t do at all, so Duncan from the Warhammer Studio has whipped up some tactical advice for those going into battle against the Waaagh!.

If you are on the side of the great green horde, then you’ll want to continue on as the ‘Eavy Metal team join White Dwarf for a masterclass in Ork painting. You painting Orks, that is, not Orks painting – they can barely hold a brush without breaking it.

Max, Chris, and Tom talk all about how they decided on the colours they’d use for Orks this edition, and what changed for the faction as they took on new life in 11th edition. They even pull out one of the new Orks transfer sheets to highlight some of the glyphs you can add, in case you’ve ever wondered what the difference between the white skull, the blue skull, and the red skull is.

There’s also your usual favourites, including scenarios of the month for Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar, along with tear-out rules for using King Brodd and the Beast-smasher Mega-Gargant in games of Brawlers of Behemat.*

White Dwarf 529 is available to pre-order from Saturday. Never miss an issue – and get them delivered directly to your door with fancy full-art covers – by signing up for a 12-month subscription.
