There’s been a lot of information smuggled off Volkus over the past few weeks, as details of Operation Hivestorm pass from curious pilgrim to loose-lipped labourer while the shadow war for control of the Massif Ballistus rages beyond their sight. From the earliest teases to the most recent painting guides, there’s a lot to take in, so we’ve collected everything you need to see in one convenient place.
The Teaser
If you tuned into the Slaughter at Hel Crown Preview Show, you will have been bamboozled like the rest of us when a transmission most definitely not from the Mortal Realms cut into the end of the livestream.
Soon there were more signs of the upcoming reveal – until at last the picture became clearer and the looming majesty of the Massif Ballistus came into view.
The Reveal
Roaring in from the churning clouds over Volkus, a brand new cinematic trailer touched down to give eager commanders a look at the next chapter in Kill Team – with more than a few shades of the awesome Krieg vs Kommandos trailer.
This was swiftly followed by the reveal of the Tempestus Aquilons and their Vespid Stingwing opponents, along with the whole contents of the Kill Team: Hivestorm boxed set.
The Vespid Stingwings
The insectile Vespid are a client species of the T’au Empire. Before learning how these fearsome flying warriors played in-game, we reminded ourselves who the Vespid were and how they ended up under the guns of Volkus.
The Warhammer Painting Team have put together a few tutorials covering all aspects of the Vespid colour scheme – starting with the Strain Leader and the dutiful Overseer Drone.
These tips include alternate colour schemes for Vespid from other strains, as well as an in-depth look at the advanced technology entrusted to them by the Earth Caste.
The Tempestus Aquilons
The elite drop troopers of the Tempestus Aquilons are another unit hailing from the Schola Progenium – grizzled daredevils who drop into fierce fighting from near orbit.
With such incredibly detailed miniatures, the task of painting the Aquilons might seem daunting, so the Painting Team got to work on a few guides – starting with the Tempestor squad leader and everyone’s favourite Pathfinder-gibbing Servo-sentry from the cinematic trailer.
They may not have technicolour carapaces, but the Militarum Tempestus know the value of a bright and bombastic uniform, and the next Intermediate painting tutorials covered both alternate colour schemes and the technological accessories on their armour.
The New Edition
All that’s left is to cover all of the other exciting things going on in the new edition of Kill Team, beginning with a closer look at the planet Volkus, the setting for the latest season.
Alongside new lore and new miniatures, the next edition brings updates and refinements to the core rules of Kill Team, with a few dynamic changes streamlining the spec ops experience.
Then what better way to round it all out than a little hobby challenge – painting an entire kill team in just five days! Ollie and Emma stepped up to the plate and took one side of the boxed set each, showing how simple techniques can get a whole squad of elite operatives into the killzone between the release of Hivestorm and the special global mission arriving on the 11th of October.
If you want to dig into Kill Team further, including guides to all of the factions launching alongside the new edition and deep dives into the new rules for equipment, terrain, and more, Warhammer Community has you covered, and there’ll be even more to come soon. Stay tuned, and watch the skies!
