We’re a few weeks into the new edition of Necromunda and our friends in the Warhammer Design Studio have been hard at work converting some suitable vehicles for their gangs.

For my Cargo-8 Ridgehauler I really wanted the whole piece to feel ramshackle and upcycled. This crew roam the ash wastes looking for the next prize to chop up and sell to the highest bidder. Times are tough in the underhive though, and the crew have had to modify their vehicle on the fly using scraps and spares meant for sale just to keep this rig rolling!
You’ll see they’re transporting the remains of an Arvus Lighter and the front of the rig features the drilldozer from the front of a Goliath Rockgrinder.

After reading Spire of Primus, I was inspired by a piece of art which had an Enforcer patrol with two Ironcrawlers with cages on their back. I took this idea and developed it into what an armoured version for transporting VIPs (very important prisoners) would look like. I modified the Munitorum Armoured Container to look more like the back of a contemporary police van by adding barred windows and seating for those who have been deemed unworthy in the eyes of the Pax Helmawr. The main cab was slightly altered to fit the armour of the Enforcers and their trusty Cyber-mastiff (who takes pride of place by sticking their head out of the window).
The whole vehicle was then painted in the same colour scheme of my Enforcers while making the container slightly darker to give the feeling of a much older piece of equipment which has been in service for many years. The last job was to add a smattering of dirt and ash to the lower half of the vehicle, where dirt would naturally develop and build up after a long drive through the ash wastes.

The Cargo-8 Ridgehauler is such a great kit that I didn't really feel the need to convert it, I simply wanted to paint lots of them! Luckily the kit allows you to add up to four trailers. I had one goal I wanted to achieve – to make the Ridgehaulers appear a little heavier and sit deeper into the ground. Tyres on large heavy vehicles bulge and flatten out where they contact the ground, so my goal would prove to be an epic task as it involved sanding flat the tread of 32 wheels and making sure every wheel was the same height.

When the Cargo-8 challenge was suggested, I pulled one of those nagging projects from the back of my mind – Guild of Coin leased heavy industry vehicles. When I’d said the idea out loud, I had to follow through with it! Luckily, the old Galvanic Servohaulers had been made available on a Made To Order, so I grabbed a set and started work.
The truck cabs were enclosed with plasticard and wire mesh to give the models a heavier look. This enabled me to save the crew to use in the future to make the workers and guards to go along with the vehicles. The vehicles were sprayed with Leadbelcher, and then a rough red/brown layer was applied to the panel areas, followed by yellow applied via stippling to create a worn, and chipped look, emphasised by some added silver sponge chipping. An Agrax Earthshade wash was then applied to tint and unify the whole model, followed by more washes applied in streaks to emphasise that worn look.
These were intended to be used as terrain pieces on ash waste setups, but there is a very good chance I’m going to be making more, along with the workers and guards I mentioned. Now the new edition of Necromunda is here, maybe it’s time to make a new gang – perhaps a Guild of Coin-sponsored Outcast gang…
