Sunday Preview – Protect the yields

It’s a big week for Warhammer 40,000, with releases for four separate factions – most especially the resurgent Leagues of Votann, who return with eight new datasheets and six precious new boxes of plastic.

They’re joined by a surprise Made to Order offering for the Old World – three units of classic metal Bretonnian infantry return for nine days only.

Codex: Leagues of Votann

The Leagues of Votann are back with an epic new Codex, arriving in both regular and collector’s editions.

This is 144 pages of pure, unadulterated Kin – and now featuring added Ironkin compadres. You get 21 datasheets and five Detachments, feeding into a new army rule named Prioritised Efficiency – your units collect Yield Points by capturing and protecting objectives to unlock powerful combat bonuses.

On top of this, there’s a new Combat Patrol – Bane-slayer’s Bulwark – as well as comprehensive Crusade rules, painting guides, galleries of miniatures, and lashings of brand-new lore for a faction that’s still mysterious to most in the galaxy.

The collector’s edition features a soft-touch cover, unique cover art, a ribbon bookmark and teal foil edges.

Buri Aegnirssen

Before they returned to the galactic stage a few years ago, it was whispered that the Leagues of Votann had all been devoured by Hive Fleet Leviathan. Rumours of their demise turned out to have been greatly exaggerated, but the Great Devourer did not go entirely hungry… Buri Aegnirssen is the rage-filled sole survivor of the Emberg-Aegnir Bloc, a scarred vigilante who now plies the leagues, fighting the ever-present menace.

Buri is a new character who fights with a unique darkstar glaive dubbed Bane, dealing five S12 or 10 S6 attacks in combat. A Lone Operative, he returns from the dead on a 2+ once per game.

Arkanyst Evaluator

The Arkanysts are tinkerers and experimenters, among the madder members of the Science Guild, who bring experimental weaponry to the field. Their transmatter inverters have three increasingly dangerous modes of fire – both to the foe and the firer – but when they work, they work. The kit comes with two head options: bare and helmeted.

Memnyr Strategist

No matter how many dimensions you might think you’re playing chess in, the Memnyr Strategist is playing in one or two more. This metallic mastermind is our first Ironkin character – don’t tell Mars – and a tactical genius who’s always one step ahead of the game. His already impressive computational power is boosted by the kognitâar mantle swirling behind him, processing yet more deadly permutations.

The Memnyr can join units of Ironkin Steeljacks, allowing them to use Overwatch and Heroic Interventions for free, and helping you manipulate your Yield Points.

Cthonian Earthshakers

So far, we’ve seen the Cthonian Mining Guilds as the shirtless shock-troops of the Oathbands. Now, however, the rippling bare biceps of the Beserks are joined by a few of their more circumspect colleagues – sensible enough to have donned armoured tank tops for the occasion. These are the Earthshaker crews, who man subterranean artillery with two ordnance options. Some of them still carry plasma weapons, so don’t get any ideas…

This box contains two Earthshakers, which come with two barrel options representing each ordnance, and interchangeable base toppers. The crew have interchangeable heads, bodies, and left arms, while the Ironkin can switch between ammo types. The box includes a Leagues of Votann transfer sheet comprising 555 decals.

Ironkin Steeljacks

These are the abominable intelligences the Adeptus Mechanicus warned you about, rangy paragons of martial prowess used to anchor the battle line or smash into the breach. With a 2+ save and a Preymark Crest that grants Precision when attacking enemies entrenched upon an objective, you can arm them either with heavy volkanite disintegrators or autoch-pattern bolters and plasma swords. There’s a Steeljack for every occasion.

The box contains three Steeljacks, with enough arms to outfit them all with either loadout. One can be built as a Theyn, while they can all also exchange their plasma swords for concussion gauntlets.

Kapricus

The Kapricus is a rugged light vehicle used by the hardy Hernkyn, doughty rangers who scout ahead of their holds seeking the tastiest claims. It can be built in two configurations: the Kapricus Defender and the Kapricus Carrier. The former mounts a magna-rail cannon or HYLas rotary cannon on a turret alongside twin magna-coil autocannons, while the latter can ferry five Hernkyn Yaegirs, offering fire support from its magna-coil autocannons.

This kit has three turret options split across the two configurations, and six interchangeable heads, including two Ironkin. It also includes a Leagues of Votann transfer sheet with 555 decals.

Combat Patrol: Leagues of Votann

Bane-slayer’s Bulwark is a new Combat Patrol for Warhammer 40,000. It’s a complete force in a box for this smaller game mode, or the perfect core for a new army project. Vynn Bane-slayer is an Einhyr Champion leading a hard-hitting infantry force of five Einhyr Hearthguard, three Brôkhyr Thunderkyn, and 10 Hearthkyn Warriors. There’s a specific way to build each unit for games of Combat Patrol, but they all have numerous loadout and cosmetic options. The set includes two 555-decal transfer sheets.

Leagues of Votann Dice and Datacards

Round out your Oathband with these optional extras: a set of 16 sea-green dice with the faction icon on the six face, and a pack of 26 quick-reference datacards comprising every datasheet in the faction (including for Combat Patrol) and the army rule.

Vulkan He’stan

The Forgefather continues the search for his Primarch’s panoply with a dominant new miniature. Equipped with a bolt pistol, the Gauntlet of the Forge, and the Spear of Vulkan, he can be attached to Assault Intercessor Squads, Company Heroes, Infernus Squads, and Tactical Squads. A single-pose model, he has two head options: bare and helmeted.

Combat Patrol: Salamanders

The Pyroclasm Assault Force is the new Combat Patrol for the Salamanders – a complete force for use in this smaller Warhammer 40,000 game mode or the beginnings of a larger unit. Go in weapons-hot with Adrax Agatone, an Invader ATV, three Eradicators, five Assault Intercessors, and 10 Infernus Marines. As always, many of these units have cosmetic options and variable loadouts, though the Combat Patrol rules have set constructions.

Salamanders Dice Set

Show your devotion to the Salamanders with this set of 16 Salamanders dice cast in fiery yellow with black pips and the Chapter icon on the six face.

World Eaters Slaughterbound

Available on his own for the first time, the Slaughterbound is an exalted champion of the World Eaters, a musclebound murder-machine who has achieved the body beautiful with the ultimate PED: a dose of Bloodthirster possession. He can lead units of Eightbound and exalted Eightbound, whipping an already unstable bunch of lads into such a frenzy that one of them returns from the dead every turn.

He has a choice of two heads and an optional icon of Khorne on his armour.

Death Guard Lord of Poxes

The Lord of Poxes is the other great champion of Chaos to receive the gift of a separate release, but unlike Khorne’s yoked chosen, he doesn’t care about his body at all. No, this guy keeps his armour on so he can brew up the foulest miasmas imaginable to surround him and the unit of Plague Marines he joins.

Warhammer Commemorative Series: Captain Centos

Captain Centos has returned to celebrate major Warhammer store milestones across the world. This single-pose character miniature comes with a choice of two head options, and while he’s painted as an Ultramarine, the figure itself can be used by any Space Marine Chapter.

He’s only available at Warhammer stores, arriving for sale on 9 August – and only while stocks last.

Kingdom of Bretonnia Made to Order

The King has decreed it: the armies of the fair Kingdom of Bretonnia are to be bolstered with veteran reinforcements in order to better resist the relentless march of Settra. To this end, six sets of metal miniatures dating back to the mid 90s are returning on a Made to Order basis. They will be available from 10am local time around the world on 9 August until 8am BST on 18 August. Remember, as Made to Order products, they can take up to 180 days to arrive.

Six Peasant Bowmen are joined by three Peasant Bowmen Command, while six Men-at-Arms with Spears are led by three Men-at-Arms with Spears Command. There are also six Men-at-Arms with Halberds (you get two each of the three miniatures) and three Men-at-Arms with Halberds Command. The Command Groups come with six paper banners, while all Men-at-Arms arrive with one or two positively ancient fighter shield sprues.

The Lords of Silence (Illustrated and Annotated edition)

The galaxy has changed. Armies of Chaos march across the Dark Imperium, among them the Death Guard, servants of the Plague God. But shadows of the past haunt these traitors… Chris Wraight’s epic novel returns in a fabulous new illustrated and annotated edition, with new illustrations, author commentary, and an afterword.

The High Kâhl’s Oath (paperback in English, French, and German)

Myrtun Dammergot, Hernkyn Prospect leader for the Kindred of the Eternal Starforge, is exploiting the unending galactic conflict and living a life of adventure without the unwanted burden of responsibility. But when a messenger from her Kindred’s Hold ship brings news that upends everything she knows, Myrtun and her companions are plunged into a venture beyond their wildest expectations, and find themselves set against an ancient, deadly foe guarding a mysterious but magnificent prize.

The epic first Leagues of Votann novel by Gav Thorpe gets a paperback release in English, French, and German, and eBook releases in French and German.

Final Deployment (paperback, eBook, MP3)

Led by the merciless Tempestor Traxel, the Scions of First Eradicant squad drop directly into the fires of a global civil war. Joined by a Commissar who personifies the suffering of his past and facing a foe from the darkest days of the Imperium, Traxel’s fracturing psyche places the entire world at risk. On Rilis, he will face the foe that broke him, in this epic novel by RS Wilt, available in paperback, eBook, and MP3.

Deathworlder (paperback and eBook in French)

On a planet trapped in the closing jaws of the Great Devourer, Major Wulf Khan of the Catachan 903rd receives a final, desperate mission – one which will take her soldiers into the maw of the Tyranid threat. Victoria Hayward’s novel now appears in French, in paperback and eBook editions.

TOMY Necron Scarab Plush

What could be cuter than an aeons-old drone mindlessly serving the mad whims of sclerotic xenos dynasties who ruled the galaxy in ages past? The same thing reformulated as an adorable soft toy. The latest licensed Warhammer plush from TOMY lands soon, and it’s ready to do your bidding.

There are four shows on Warhammer+ this week. The final episode of Kill Lupercal arrives, bringing this titan-focused show to close with a bang.

Over on Questing Nights, the gang wrap up their classic Warhammer Quest campaign with a showdown against the Chaos Sorcerer in her tower. On Deep Strike, Alex speaks to the team from Bulwark about their smash hit (and unexpectedly funny) video game Mechanicus, and discusses what to expect from the upcoming sequel. Finally, on Painting Desk, Kieran from the ’Eavy Metal team introduces us to his stunning Old World collection of Bretonnians.

Finally, on Warhammer Community we’re exploring the Leagues of Votann – and there are some treats for fans of the Middle-earth™ Strategy Battle Game.
