Sunday Preview – Grand Cathay marches from Nan-Gau

Bells ring and horns blow on this momentous occasion, as the mighty armies of Grand Cathay – long secluded within their distant realm – now march onto the battlefields of the Old World. This stunning new faction launches with its first wave of miniatures and a packed Arcane Journal, while over in the realms of Middle-earth the latest crop of Made to Order miniatures welcome back the forces of Gondor.

Arcane Journal: Armies of Grand Cathay

For the essential companion to the new Grand Cathay faction, look no further. Arcane Journal: Armies of Grand Cathay is packed to the gills with new background lore and rules for the Storm Dragon’s faithful warriors, giving you everything you need to start using your newest army on the battlefield – from unit profiles and upgrades to 18 new magic items and new spell lores.

This Arcane Journal will be available to pre-order in a softback edition.

Grand Cathay Battalion

Raise the banner of Nan-Gau and start your new Grand Cathay army with their debut battalion box, packed with brand new miniatures to build your force around. This hefty box contains the following:

  • 30 Jade Warriors, buildable with either hand weapons and shields or halberds. There are enough parts to build two units of 15 or three units of 10, all with full commands.

  • 10 Jade Lancers, powerful shock cavalry equipped with hand weapons, shields, and lances. This set contains enough parts to build two units of five or a single unit of 10, each with options for a full command.

  • Two Cathayan Grand Cannons, which can alternately be built as Fire Rain Rocket Batteries. Each comes with four crew members, including a hulking Ogre Artillery Crew who can be taken as an upgrade for both units.

  • A Grand Cathay transfer sheet, including 404 transfers for use on Jade Warriors and Jade Lancers.

This box will be available while stocks last. Rules for all of the units above can be found in the Arcane Journal: Armies of Grand Cathay book.

Shugengan Lord on Great Spirit Longma

The greatest generals of Grand Cathay ride into battle atop Great Spirit Longma – powerful and intelligent creatures possessed of great strength and the ability to fly. Powerful dragon-blooded Shugengan wizards favour a safe(ish) space from which to cast their incantations, while the more martial-minded prefer to plunge into the thick of combat. This incredibly detailed multi-part plastic Lord choice for Grand Cathay armies comes with two alternate heads each for the Shugengan Lord and Great Spirit Longma, as well as two options each for the Lord’s left and right arms.

Gate Masters of the Celestial Cities

The Jade Warriors are led by experienced soldiers known as Gate Masters, who must have survived a full decade defending their city to earn their prestigious title. As such, they are invariably veteran warriors with a particular knack for defensive battles, and can exert their authority over friendly troops with practiced ease.

This kit contains two multi-part plastic Gate Masters – one on foot and one mounted – with interchangeable arms that equip one with a large Battle Standard and the other with a Celestial Blade and shield. Dealer’s choice who gets what.

Sky Lantern

Sky Lanterns are incredible wonders of Cathayan ingenuity, used both as mobile gun platforms and command centres to scout enemies from on high and direct troops in battle. Each Sky Lantern consists of a vast floating lantern held aloft by a caged Vermilion Warbird, and the elevated position they occupy makes them a particular favourite of Magistrates – consummate strategists who excel at organising the armies of Grand Cathay.

The massive, multi-part plastic Sky Lantern comes with options to mount either a Magistrate or a Strategist, though this miniature can also be used on foot with the square base provided. The crew can be built with iron hail guns and dragon fire bombs or long-barreled crane guns, and the lantern itself can be equipped with a bomb rack. The kit comes with a 115-piece transfer sheet.

Cathayan Sentinel

Created by the Celestial Dragon’s mastery over the elemental winds, Cathayan Sentinels are titanic earthen constructs built to defend the Empire from the most powerful of foes. They tower over mortals and daemons alike, wiping out entire regiments with great sweeps of their glaives and soaking up immense amounts of damage.

The Cathayan Sentinel is a gigantic plastic miniature that can be built in two distinct poses, with two head options, two neck options that change which direction it’s facing, and four blade components to accessorise their weapon.

Middle-earth Made to Order

More classic Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game kits return on a Made to Order basis, this time focusing on the valiant defenders of Minas Tirith.

Prince Imrahil was only just released yesterday, and already his kinsmen from the majestic city of Dol Amroth are following in his footsteps. You can order a pack of Swan Knights on Foot comprising six miniatures armed with swords and shields, two mounted Swan Knights hefting lethal lances, and a set of Swan Knight Commanders made up of mounted and unmounted versions of the Captain and Banner Bearer.

Meanwhile the dutiful hero Faramir, Captain of Ithilien – mounted and wearing heavy armour – leads the armies of Men alongside two Minas Tirith Command Sets. Each contains a Captain and Banner Bearer on foot, garbed in the classic plate armour of Gondor’s armies.

All of these miniatures are cast in metal and will be available to order from 10am BST, Saturday 21st June until 8am BST, Monday 30th June. As with all Made to Order products, they may take up to 180 days to arrive.

13th Legion

The saga of the infamous Last Chancers – elite penal troops sent on dangerous but vital missions – is one of the highlights of the Black Library catalogue, and now their first epic adventure comes to audiobook for the first time. 13th Legion charts the trials and tribulations of the eponymous penal battalion led by the fearsome Colonel Schaeffer, as they gather a new crop of sacrificial desperados and set off to do the Emperor’s bidding – or die trying.

This week on Warhammer+, How We Roll talks to the Warhammer Studio team about how the latest General’s Handbook from Warhammer Age of Sigmar came about, and how they make the changes they do. Elsewhere, Loremasters digs into the history of White Dwarf’s very own chapter – the Tome Keepers – and the Scrap Demon gang put their premium kitbashing skills to the test by building mighty Adeptus Mechanicus monstrosities.

Here at Warhammer Community, our daily coverage of the new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy continues with a close look at the new Saturnine Terminators and Dreadnought, with their rules, kit, and lore on full display.
