Space Wolves – Meet the new leaders of the pack

The annals of the Adeptus Astartes are replete with legendary warriors and mighty champions, but when it comes to full-on, unnecessarily awesome levels of glorious heroism, nobody does it better than the Space Wolves – at least according to Fenrisian super-fan Si, who you may know from Warhammer TV.

Well, luckily for you, the upcoming range includes no fewer than five new and updated Characters, as well as a bespoke Detachment in which to get the biggest bang for your heroic buck. But before we delve into the aptly named Saga of the Bold Detachment, let’s take a look at the new Characters, and which of the Chapter’s units are worthy enough to accompany them into battle.

First up are the jaw-dropping new miniatures for Logan Grimnar, the High King of Fenris, and the champion of his Kingsguard, Arjac Rockfist.

With both these legends of the Chapter taking to the battlefield in Terminator armour, their bodyguards of choice are Wolf Guard Terminators. Rugged Resilience will see these stoic Wolf Guard protect their lords against all but the most determined attacks, though to that end you’ll likely want to swap out a few storm bolters for storm shields for that handy additional Wound.

Keeping these two alive as long as possible will serve you well, for the Old Wolf’s guile will burn through your opponent’s CP at a rate of knots, while his mighty champion will smash apart anything that they hold dear.

Meanwhile, the stunning new version of the High Rune Priest Njal Stormcaller sees him return to his power-armoured roots. As such, he has a wider choice of units to lead, but you should look no further than a pack of Grey Hunters to accompany him, as they’ll benefit most from his Wind Walker psychic ability. With an effective movement of 13”, the Assault weapon ability on their rapid-firing bolt carbines, and a whopping OC of three apiece, Njal and his Grey Hunters can rapidly relocate and dominate objectives at will.

It’s handy that the Wolf Priest kit comes with a number of different assembly options, as you’ll want one to lead each of your Blood Claw packs into the fray. Their Healing Balms will keep your reckless young warriors topped up, while their bellowed oratory will inspire your Blood Claws to even greater heights of ferocity.

Finally, a Wolf Guard Battle Leader is the perfect choice to accompany your Wolf Guard Headtakers. Whether you choose to arm both your heroic leader and his bodyguard with storm shields for additional staying power and take the fight to the foe on foot, or ride to war inside an Impulsor with dual-wielding Headtakers for a brace of additional Attacks, they’re a match made in the halls of Russ.

So, to the most heroic of all Detachments, Saga of the Bold. You’ll want to load up on as many Characters as possible* so that your units benefit from all those handy re-rolls, courtesy of Heroes All. The more Character units you have, the more likely you are to successfully achieve three or more Boasts, thereby completing the Saga and earning similar re-rolls for your non-Character units, too!

And if that weren’t enough motivation to try and achieve your Boasts (like any true Fenrisian needs a reason to prove their worth), the Skjald enhancement even offers a bonus CP for each one you achieve!

Thanks, Si. The Space Wolves Army Set will be available to pre-order this Saturday – this is the first place you can find the new Codex Supplement and many of the new miniatures, while more will be on their way in due course, after they complete the special part of their armouring ritual in which they have to tie on all their little runes and trinkets.

* Easily done with the Space Wolves – remember that both Bjorn the Fell-handed and Murderfang are characters too, and we haven’t even mentioned Ragnar Blackmane, Ulrik the Slayer or the Iron Priesthood!
