Grey Knights Showcase – A classic army returns to welcome the new Codex

The Grey Knights are a stunning army to behold, with glittering silver armour and intricate details on scroll work and personal heraldries. The new Codex: Grey Knights is on the way, so we’re taking a closer look at one of the finest armies to grace the pages of its earlier incarnations: a blessed Crusade force brought to life by Army and Battlefield Painter Jason.

Starting as an Armies on Parade project featured in White Dwarf, Jason’s Grey Knights evolved from a few humble units in his existing collection to an entire Crusade army – building on a classic Strike Squad and Terminator core with Interceptors, a Venerable Dreadnought, and a Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight. Since then, the army has expanded into a fully fledged strike force, adding more vehicular support with a pair of Land Raiders, an extra Dreadknight, and a Stormraven Gunship.

What really sets these Grey Knights apart are their intricate lava bases, which Jason sees as coming from a mission to Nocturne, home world of the Salamanders – another of his armies. The bases are built up with cork for the rocky surface, with streaks of Stirland Mud paint added to create ripples of lava and balls of modelling putty standing in for gloopy bubbles.

Every Grey Knight in the army displays their own personal heraldry – a rare indulgence allowed to these champions among champions. This gives the whole army a deeply personalised Crusade feel, enhanced by the heavy weathering that sells the idea of them fighting across the Imperium without pause.

To top everything off, Jason added the inimitable Castellan Crowe to lead his force, who had not long hit the shelves when the army made their first appearance in the 2021 Codex. The smoky black flames sweeping from his blade match the scorched ground perfectly, with just a few motes of flame shining through to illuminate his intricate scrollwork.

The new Codex: Grey Knights is up for pre-order on Saturday, alongside the Sanctic Conclave Battleforce – with its updated Grand Master in Nemesis Dreadknight kit – and a fresh new Combat Patrol.
