The Big Summer Preview – Reinforcing the Kindred

The Leagues of Votann are back with six new plastic kits, a new Codex and all the accessories. There’s a whole lot to enjoy!

Buri Aegnirssen

Known as the Thrice-Devoured, Buri is a new special character for the Leagues of Votann, and he’s a kin with issues. Buri is the last survivor of the Emberg-Aegnir Bloc, a league utterly devoured by Hive Fleet Leviathan. He bears the sorrow and bitterness of his lost Kin – arriving unbidden to fight alongside other Leagues, for reasons that are entirely his own.

Buri carries Bane, a darkstar glaive of prodigious power, but his most obvious identifier is the skull of a Tyranid beast he wears as a trophy. In battle, this ferocious survivor is seriously hard to kill… in fact, the first time he falls in battle, on a 2+ he’ll just get back up again, ready to seek vengeance once more.

Arkanyst Evaluator

Part mad scientist, part deadly gunner, and all Kin, the Arkanyst Evaluator is a member of the science guilds responsible for testing new technologies. Every battle is a field test where they can ensure their latest weapons are fit for mass production.

Our Arkanyst is equipped with a transmatter inverter – a weapon that unleashes deadly energies to rupture tissue at a cellular level. It’s got three fire modes, and at its most extreme it can trigger lethal atomic transformations…

Memnyr Strategist

The Memnyr is the first Ironkin character we’ve seen for the Leagues of Votann – a cunning individual with steepled fingers and strange floating tethers. It carries a gun, but this is not the main reason to include it in your army. No, the plan is to assign it to a unit of Steeljacks (see below) and use its kognitâar mantle to glorious effect.

This unusual piece of tech allows it to link to additional cerebral units, which will multiply cognitive power. In real terms, this allows you to Fire Overwatch or make a Heroic Intervention for free each battle round, and gain or spend Yield Points* when you’re near objectives.

Ironkin Steeljacks

Steeljacks are a unit of Ironkin equipped with heavy-duty bodies and equally heavy weapons. They have been blessed by the Votann with innate martial talents, allowing them to anchor an entire battleline, shrugging off firepower that would lay even a Thunderkyn low.

This new kit lets you build two different types of Steeljack: a unit with bolters and concussion gauntlets or plasma swords, or one with heavy volkanite disintegrators. These guys are tough, well-armed and have the special rules to back up the talk – including a Preymark Crest: critical hits on enemies within range of an objective receive Precision. Kiss those enemy characters goodbye!

Cthonian Earthshakers

These high-tech mole mortars are a real blast from the past – with a heritage dating back all the way to the Rogue Trader era. Cthonian Earthshakers are a hybrid of technologies that fire an explosive payload deep under the surface to emerge unexpectedly amid the enemy.

Each is served by a trio of Kin, who come with a variety of options, including different munitions – the Earthshakers can fire breacher or tremor shells – and various tools, including a geomantic echolocator.

Kapricus

The Kapricus is a compact light vehicle used by the Hernkyn Yaegirs. The kit has two build options, the Kapricus Defender (a fast-moving weapons platform) and the Kapricus Carrier (a five-berth troop transport specifically for Yaegirs).

It features distinctive anti-grav repellers and curved armour panels, while the crew are also clad in thick coats like the other Hernkyn – except for an Ironkin who can operate the gun on the back.

The Kapricus Carrier is armed with a twin magna-coil autocannon at the front and another magna-coil autocannon on the top, but the Defender trades its crew space out for a magna-rail cannon or a HYLas rotary cannon.

Codex: Leagues of Votann

There’s also a new Codex coming for the Leagues of Votann, with 144 pages packed full of lore, rules and gorgeous art. There’s more background information on the Leagues of Votann presented here than before, with plenty of fresh lore to sink your teeth into.

We’ll cover the rules off closer to the release, but the army rule has been entirely rewritten. There’s also a new resource called Yield Points, alongside five Detachments, 21 Datasheets, a Combat Patrol, Crusade rules and a whole lot more.

This Codex will be available in a normal edition and as a lavish Collectors Edition, which will be available while stocks last.

Combat Patrol

Bane-slayer’s Bulwark is the new Combat Patrol, and a great way to add some serious muscle to your army, or start a new one. Inside you’ll find an Einhyr Champion, 5x Einhyr Hearthguard, 3x Brokhyr Thunderkyn, 10x Hearthkyn Warriors, and a transfer sheet with 555 decals.

And of course, there will be a new dice set and a deck of Datacards to round out the Leagues of Votann release.

In the meantime, there’s plenty to come from the Big Summer Preview. Click the button below to return to the hub.

* Yield Points are the new Leagues of Votann mechanic. Players earn them by doing things such as controlling objectives and making kills. They can have a variety of profound effects on the battle, from small bonuses such as re-rolls for specific models, to army-wide buffs to Hit rolls. We’ll cover it all in detail closer to release.
