Warhammer art through the years: Tyranids

The galaxy is a big old place, filled with innumerable worlds, billions of living people, plus a fair share of horrors unimaginable. For Tyranids, it’s nearly all just dinner, of course. Little is known about the origins of these insatiable xenos, but questions of provenance tend to be unimportant when you’re staring down a swarm of ravenous bioforms. The existential horror of these single-minded creatures, and the myriad mutations created by the Hive Mind, have provided rich inspiration for many pieces of art over the years. We’ve collected some of our favourites, showcasing the Tyranids at their most horrifying.

A truly terrifying yet somewhat enlightening look at the endless swarms of the hive fleets. While we could marvel at these nightmarish predators for much longer, we’d worry about attracting the attention of the Hive Mind, and we really can’t deal with that on a Friday.

If there’s a favourite piece of Tyranids art we’ve missed, make sure to show it to us on the Warhammer 40,000 Facebook page. Next week’s gallery is dedicated to the magnificent steeds and corrupted destriers of the Imperial and Chaos Knights.
