Kill Team Communicatus – The Warhammer Community team paint the Deathwatch

With Kill Team: Tomb World up for pre-order on Saturday, the Space Marines that gave the game its name are returning to tabletops with an incredible new kit.

Filling their squads with veteran Space Marines on secondment from other Chapters, Deathwatch Kill Teams have always held a high level of hobby appeal. With its huge selection of operatives, heads, and Chapter shoulder pads, we knew we’d have to do a Warhammer Community Deathwatch squad. Calling on the help of our own Chapter veterans, 10 willing and eager hobbyists split the kit with one stipulation: no duplicate Chapters.

You can only select five operatives for each mission, but rules can’t stop you from putting a cool squad together for a swish photo op.

Ben (a longtime Watch Captain) made the Watch Sergeant into a Dark Angel using a hooded head and a shoulder pad from their upgrade kit

Our other Tacticus operatives include a Blood Angels Blademaster by Jon, and an Exorcists Gunner embellished with suspicious runes by Riccardo. James supplied a Red Scorpions Demolisher, while Charlie contributed an Iron Snakes Aegis who has snuck some intricate personal heraldry onto his shield. Joe’s Scythes of the Emperor Marksman rounds out the combat squad.

For the Phobos contingent, perennial Raven Guard enjoyer Joel has naturally supplied a Headtaker, while Tom has gone for the hipster choice with a Disruptor hailing from the Mentor Legion, using the strikingly similar Raptors pauldron on the main sprue.

In Gravis armour, we’ve got an Imperial Fists Bombard by Adam, and a Breacher by big-time Salamander Mike.

Joel used the Mk VI helmet from the Raven Guard upgrade pack on his Deathwatch Marine, filing off the Sergeant’s skull and painting his trademark eye markings and obsidian blades.

Riccardo got all fancy by putting runes on his Exorcist’s shoulder pad. They’re a mix of freehand and cunningly pilfered Thousand Sons transfers. He’s also made his first (very impressive) attempt at a plasma glow.

Instead of using one of the more feral, fang-bearing options, Jon chose a head with a more neutral expression for his Blademaster to show the less discussed hyper-disciplined facet of the Chapter. The operative is described as a pragmatic duelist, rather than a gung-ho shock trooper.

Adam kept his Gravis-armoured Bombard in a helmet – all the better to drown out the roar of a mighty frag cannon – but also wanted to keep with the visual identity of the Imperial Fists. Using a Chapter relic helmet dating all the way back to the 31st Millennium, the knightly faceplate and laurels fit the aesthetic he wanted for this long-range bruiser.
