When Joel isn’t busy making sure you can see pictures of brand new miniatures, pieces of art, and excerpts from Battletomes and Codexes on Warhammer Community, he’s generally busy painting miniatures, often for our Staff Showcase articles – Terminators, Grand Cathay warriors, Raven Guard, Death Korps of Krieg and more, he’s extremely prolific, and somehow he’s found time for two new Blood Bowl teams! He won’t teach us his tricks, but he will share his photos.
Joe: I’ve been a Blood Bowl fan for quite some time now, starting with the 2016 edition of the game. As a long-time fan of Elves, Aelves, and Aeldari it’s no surprise I started with an Elven Union team, but since then I have built and painted a plethora of other teams, and I love playing them all.
Roll on the new edition! And between experimenting with all the changes to the current teams, I’ve been excited to get my hands on both of the new ones too. I was fortunate enough to get hold of an early copy to paint up and have had a blast with both the Bretonnians and Tomb Kings.
Bretonnians
The Bretonnian miniatures are all oozing with character, and it was very fun to paint a quartered scheme, if a little time consuming. My favourites are probably the Knight Catchers, who seem to have a rather pompous stride as they carry the ball.

The models were sprayed with Wraithbone to make putting the bright colours on top a lot easier. The yellow sections are painted using Dorn Yellow, and the pink with Fulgrim Pink, both highlighted by adding a bit of White Scar to each colour.

Tomb Kings
Around the time we released Warhammer: The Old World, the studio painted some gorgeous miniatures and I got inspired by Lucy’s blackened bones on her Necrolith Bone Dragon. Fast forward now, and I took that inspiration and painted the team with it in mind, and have aptly named them The Forsaken Fossils.

The models were sprayed Chaos Black to save time painting the bones, which were then highlighted using Skavenblight Dinge and Stormvermin Fur. The gold was painted with Retributor Armour and shaded using Agrax Earthshade to make it a bit more dusty and dirty. To add some colour I used Gal Vorbak Red, Ahriman Blue and Ulthuan Grey to colour in different sections of the armour and cloth.

If I had to pick a favourite for the Tomb Kings, it would have to be the Throwers, who have little wings on their sandals, but all the miniatures are fantastic. The Tomb Guardians (pictured above) are brutal and I’m really excited to figure them out on the gridiron soon.
Now that both of these teams are painted up, I just have some tokens that need doing, half a Goblin team… and a few Star Players… but I guess I’ll have a day off before getting stuck back in.
Cheers for sharing your teams, Joel. You can pre-order the new edition tomorrow and get your hands on both of the new teams. How are you going to paint yours? Let us know on the Official Warhammer Facebook and Instagram pages.
