Sunday Preview – Ghouls and gheists

Life in the Mortal Realms is tough. Those hapless mortals must contend with realms full of savage monsters, lethal environments, the ever-encroaching presence of Chaos, and gods who barely even view their subjects as pawns in an endless cosmic struggle.

Not even popping your clogs is enough to escape the fight, as you’ll probably end up drafted into Nagash’s dread legion of unquiet spirits. Or perhaps you’ll go mad long before then and take to wearing guts as a wig. The Nighthaunt and the Flesh-eater Courts will be available to pre-order next week, so let’s take a look at what death’s rich pageantry has brought us.

Battletome: Flesh-eater Courts

The grotesque Flesh-eater Courts haunt ruined castles and foetid manses, rabid ghouls daubed in grime and waving tattered pennants of flayed skin in a deranged mockery of nobility.

In their minds, they are the knights of a prosperous kingdom, but in truth they are ruled by the mad king Ushoran, whose aura of delusion hangs heavily enough to ensorcell them all. It’s nice for them – but less so for those whose bones they’re picking their teeth with.

A new 98-page battletome reinvents their battle traits, granting their heroes powerful delusions that affect how their loyal followers behave. It’s full of background lore, warscrolls, and rules, as well as a new Spearhead, Regiments and Armies of Renown, and regal new Path to Glory content

You can also get it in a smaller package: the Gamer’s Edition of Battletome: Flesh-eater Courts, which includes a full set of 52 reference cards. This version will be available only while stocks last.

High Falconer Felgryn

An envoy of the Summerking, and a figure of consternation among the abhorrant nobles, High Falconer Felgryn is seen by the serfs of the Flesh-eater domains as a folk hero of sorts. Robbing from the pantries of the courts, he has an affinity with the beasts and the downtrodden, and has recently been tasked with ferreting out the Skaven menace. His loyal falcon Grype is really a succession of different beasts that his delusion obliges him to believe is one ever-present pet, but they’re a team nonetheless.

Spearhead: Charnel Watch

The borders of these accursed domains are protected by loyal guardians like the Charnel Watch, a new Spearhead that ranges far and wide to protect their lands. An Abhorrant Gorewarden leads three Crypt Horrors and three Crypt Flayers. They are supported by a unit of Royal Beastflayers, whose Flaymaster commands a pair of terrifying Offal Hounds.

The Scarlet Jury

The Scarlet Jury are judge, jury, and executioner all in one, dispatched to return the heads of the Summerking’s enemies through an aggressively expedited legal process. Grand Justice Gormayne heads a delegation of 10 Cryptguard and a Royal Decapitator, in a Regiment of Renown that can be used with all Death and Destruction armies, plus the Cities of Sigmar, Kharadron Overlords, and Slaves to Darkness – who can just about stomach allying with this deluded tribunal.

Flesh-eater Courts Warscroll Cards and Dice

Every moment spent wondering about rules is a moment not enjoying the wonderful delusion of being part of the Carrion King’s glorious court. Keep your head in the game with a set of 40 quick reference cards, including your 27 warscroll cards, a Delusions reference card, and rules for both the Charnel Watch and existing Carrion Retainers Spearhead. Maintain an appropriately grisly appearance with a set of 16 dice, which are cast in a gory marbled red plastic, with grey pips and the faction icon on the six face.

Battletome: Nighthaunt

Nagash is a cruel god with a twisted sense of humour, and the Nighthaunt are the product of his worst impulses: an ethereal host of tortured dead, cursed to suffer punishments that reflect their transgressions in life. This 106-page Battletome reworks these frenzied gheists, who now teleport around the battlefield, terrify their enemies and reduce control scores, and replenish from Nexus of Grief terrain features. It also contains pages of background lore, and all the warscrolls and army rules you need to command them on the table top, plus a new Spearhead, Regiments and Armies of Renown rules, and Path to Glory content.

You can also get a smaller Gamer’s Edition of Battletome: Nighthaunt, which contains the same content in a smaller package with a full set of 52 reference cards. This version will be available only while stocks last.

Lord Vitriolic

Any potion peddler or fraudulent alchemist selling miracle tonics across the Mortal Realms is in for a terrible fate once their soul is claimed by Nagash. His cruel justice transforms them into a Lord Vitriolic, their lackadaisical approach to medicine twisted into an obsessive desire to alchemise. Often choosing a precise elixir to cripple a particular foe, or simply throwing whatever they have at hand in a flurry of spectral arms, their concoctions and tinctures are soul-withering and armour-corroding.

Knight of Shrouds

Formidable generals turned arch traitors who forsook their own people in order to save themselves, the Knights of Shrouds are now zealous commanders who know that to resist Nagash is akin to madness. Available now as a solo release, this tormented spectre steals vitality from his foes with his Sword of Stolen Hours, and urges infantry to assail his target immediately after he has swung at them.

Spearhead: Cursed Shacklehorde

Coalescing around a Spirit Torment and their attendant Chainghasts, the Cursed Shacklehorde hunt down smaller enemy contingents with the express purpose of dragging their souls to an underworld gaol. These three heroes are accompanied by 10 Bladegheist Revenants, 10 Dreadscythe Harridans, and two Dreadblade Harrows who gallop after stragglers on their spectral steeds.

Nighthaunt Warscroll Cards and Dice

Some say that those who come to their games unprepared will be cursed by Nagash to live an undeath of obsessive bookkeeping and rules-lawyering. Stave off this unseemly fate with the Nighthaunt Warscroll Cards, a pack of 42 quick reference cards covering your warscrolls and both the Cursed Shacklehorde and the existing Slasher Host Spearhead. A set of 16 sparkly turquoise dice will help you make those all important ward saves, featuring white ink pips and the faction logo on the six face.

Abraxia: Spear of the Everchosen (Limited Edition)

The city of Blackpyre has been raised from the ashes of the Phoenicium, razed by the hand of Abraxia. Now she must battle to remain in control as conspiracies and adversaries threaten her dominion, and seek to end the reign of Archaon’s most powerful champion. Abraxia: Spear of the Everchosen by Chris Thursten is available to pre-order next week in a gorgeous limited edition, which features special cover art, black page edges, and a black ribbon bookmark. Each copy is numbered, signed by the author, and contains an introduction by the author. Copies are only available while stocks last.

The Legend of Sigmar

The tale of Sigmar Heldenhammer is one of the greatest told in the worlds of Warhammer. From a humble tribesman, to empire founder, and finally God-King himself, this epic story is collected in the omnibus The Legend of Sigmar, which contains the novels Heldenhammer, Empire, and God King, as well as the short stories Let the Great Axe Fall, Gods of Flesh and Blood, and Sword Guardian, all by Graham McNeill. You’ll be able to pre-order it in paperback format next week.

On Warhammer TV there are three new shows to watch this week. How We Roll is taking a deep dive into the Horus Heresy, with the lead designer talking about the changes made to the new edition – including army building and the new statuses and characteristics.

Loremasters picks up the thread with an episode all about the Dropsite Massacre on Isstvan V, as Alex explains exactly what happened at this epic bloodbath. Finally, Scrap Demon has its sights on the skies as four contestants will be trying to create the most ingenious flying machine they can from a pile of random sprues.

On Warhammer Community we’ll be taking a look at the rules for the Flesh-eater Courts and Nighthaunt, as well as recapping what happened during the Soul Wars that dominated the second edition of Age of Sigmar, plus there’s a new reveal for the Middle-earth™ Strategy Battle Game.
