Saturnine: Your questions on the new edition of Horus Heresy answered

There is a new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy on the way. That means incredible new miniatures for your armies, exciting new rules for your games, and an awesome new cinematic trailer to enjoy.

The launch set is titled Saturnine, and it is packed with stunning miniatures, as well as a meaty new rulebook and all the extras you need to get playing.

The eponymous stars of the box are the legendary Saturnine Terminators, joined by the even more imposing Saturnine Dreadnought. Accompanying these juggernauts of battle is an indomitable phalanx of Space Marines in MkII Crusade armour and a formidable Araknae Quad Accelerator Platform.

We’re sure you still have tons of questions about the new edition. We’ll have plenty more news over the coming days and weeks, but for now we’ve tried to answer some of the common questions you probably have.

How different are the new rules?

The Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness game system has been going since 2012, while the first full rulebook was released in 2017. There have been several changes and updates over the years, and this new release marks the dawn of the third edition.

The Warhammer Design Studio have been pretty happy with where the game has been for the last few years, and they’ve seen this new edition as the opportunity to reinvestigate the core systems and make improvements – rather than making wholesale changes.

This is very much the same Horus Heresy game you know and love, and the team have made targeted refinements to a system that already works really well, making changes only where necessary and adding flavour wherever they can.

There are several cool new things for players to get their teeth into, including Challenge Gambits, Tactical Status, and Army Selection, all of which we’ll go into more detail on in upcoming articles.

Can I still use my current army?

You totally can. Moreover, the rules on army selection are less restrictive than they’ve ever been, giving you the opportunity to build the thematic army of your dreams.

What about my old books?

The rules for the new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy are not compatible with the rules in older books, though these all remain a great resource for lore, heraldry, and inspiration. There will be plenty of new supplements on the way, starting with five Liber army books and a campaign book centred on Isstvan V.

What else is being released at launch?

There are updated Liber books for Loyalist and Traitor Space Marine Legions, the Mechanicum, the Knights and Titans, and the Solar Auxillia, which will all be released on launch.

There is also the first in a new series of narrative campaign books. These Age of Darkness Journals will feature historic details and new rules to recreate the most iconic engagements in the Age of Darkness in your games. The first focuses on the dropsite massacre at Isstvan V.

The Libers will be available in English, French and German, while the Journals will be available in English, with the rules portions available to download for free in French and German.

What about other armies, like Custodes?

Most Horus Heresy armies will get their rules in these new Liber books, released alongside the new edition. The Talons of the Emperor will get their own Liber a little further down the road, but they will be well served in the meantime with free downloadable rules.

What’s more, there will be a range of Legacy PDFs coming out over the next few months, allowing players to deploy classic miniatures and factions from their collections.

Can I use these new models in any Legion?

Yes you can. Saturnine Terminators and Dreadnoughts, MkII armoured Space Marines, and Araknae Quad Accelerator Platforms are available for all Legions to use. Moreover, with the new army selection rules, you can also ally them with other armies – so if you feel you want some extra-heavy armour to back up your plucky Solar Auxillia force, a few Saturnine Terminators might be just the thing.

Can I paint all the models in the new box one colour and make an army out of it?

We painted the models on the box in two colours so it looks like they are having a cool fight – but you certainly don’t have to. The Saturnine box is actually an amazing way to kick off a new Space Marine Legion army for any of the 18 Legions. It’s a fully-functioning medium-sized force in its own right, and with the addition of a few more units, leaders, and perhaps a tank or two, you will have an army ready for any size of game.

Are there more new models on the way?

In short, yes. There are loads. What’s more, this edition will accelerate the move from resin to plastic – making the jump is a mix of classic units (such as the MKII Crusade armour) alongside never-before-seen units. And it’s not just the little stuff. Did you see that new tank? It’s not the only one…

What languages will this be in?

The core rulebook and the Liber army books of the new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy will, like its predecessor, be available in English, French and German.

We’ll have lots more news on the new edition over the coming weeks.
