Sunday Preview – Miao Ying raises a storm in the Old World

For years, the empire of Grand Cathay has observed the rising threat of Chaos in the Old World. Now, under the personal supervision of the Storm Dragon, Miao Ying, armies of Jade Warriors mobilise to quell this vile foe in a new Arcane Journal, accompanied by solo releases from the battalion box and Miao Ying herself. Legions Imperialis also gets a fresh lick of paint as its army rules are revamped and the Legiones Astartes are reinforced with a wide selection of new tanks, all armed with devastating weapons.

Arcane Journal: Dawn of the Storm Dragon

The empire of Grand Cathay has made its move on the Old World, sending armies to do battle with the forces of Chaos after Frydaal the Chainmaker’s attack on the northern reaches of the Empire. This 48-page supplement provides background information for the powerful Empire, and examines the long-standing relations between them and the forces of the Old World. It also contains rules for the Jade Fleet Army of Infamy, a Cathayan force led by Miao Ying and supplemented by Empire mercenaries, as well as rules for new magic items. A War in the Westerland section contains terrain generation rules for the Wasteland and Shadowlands, plus multiplayer games and how to link three new scenarios into a campaign, with guidance for taking your narrative further.

Miao Ying the Storm Dragon

Commander of the Great Bastion and ruler of Northern Cathay, Miao Ying the Storm Dragon is a cold and aloof being who has patiently defended the empire for centuries at the request of the Celestial Dragon himself. With the threat of Chaos rising in the West, Miao Ying now ranges abroad to proactively shut down its corrupting influence, utilising her dragon form and mastery of the Storm Winds to devastate her enemies. As one of the scions of the Celestial Dragon, she is a force to be reckoned with, the mere sight of her serpentine form causing foes to break ranks and scatter. This plastic kit contains two miniatures, Miao Ying in her human form and in her colossal dragon form.

Jade Warriors

Jade Warriors are the core of the standing armies that defend the cities of Grand Cathay. Furnished with fine weapons and heavy armour, they stand fast against their foes whether protecting city walls or forming the core of the Cathayan battleline in some far-off land. This kit builds 20 Jade Warriors, with enough command options for two units of 10. They can be armed with swords and shields, or halberds, and for every five miniatures in the kit there are five male and five female heads. On top of that there are a range of interchangeable accessories, and the box also contains a Grand Cathay transfer sheet with 404 decals.

Jade Lancers

Heavy cavalry armed with large spears, Jade Lancers are linebreakers of great skill and discipline. These experienced riders are well versed in commanding their mounts to charge through narrow city streets and other restrictive terrain, meaning little can get between them and their foe. This kit builds 10 Jade Lancers, with enough command options for two units of five. The box also contains a Grand Cathay transfer sheet with 404 decals.

Grand Cannon & Fire Rain Rocket Battery

The workshops of Nan-Gau work tirelessly to create the powerful cannons and rocket batteries that give the armies of Grand Cathay the edge in battle. Manned by disciples of the House of Smoke and Powder, the Grand Cannon and Fire Rain Rocket Battery unleash devastation from a distance, filling the air with acrid smoke as they unleash their destructive salvos. This kit can build two Grand Cannons or two Fire Rain Rocket Batteries, or one of each. Both are accompanied by a crew that includes an Ogre mercenary for all those heavy lifting duties.

The Northern Provinces of Grand Cathay Transfer Sheet

Decorate your army in the livery of the Northern Provinces of Grand Cathay with this A4 sized transfer sheet, which features 261 decals with full-colour and metal printing. There are decals for Sky Lantern balloons and wings, as well as banners, cloth, and cloak edges, so you can fly the colours of Miao Ying as you battle the forces of evil in the Old World.

Preyton

From the deepest, darkest woods of the Old World lopes the Preyton. The antlers cresting this monster’s head betray its origins as a once-noble Great Stag corrupted by the foul Bray-Shamans of the Beastherds. It uses its animal cunning to lure unwary foes to their death, and in battle it sows chaos by tearing its prey apart with malice that turns stomachs. This Forge World resin kit has rules in Arcane Journal: Beastmen Brayherds.

Liber Strategia

List building in Legions Imperialis gets an update with Liber Strategia, a 240-page book that collects and updates previous content from core rulebooks, The Great Slaughter, The Devastation of Tallarn, and The Rise of the Dark Mechanicum. It contains complete up-to-date Detachments and Formations for Legiones Astartes, Solar Auxilia, Mechanicum Taghmata, Dark Mechanicum, Collegia Titanica, and Knight Households – the latter of which replace the Strategic Asset rules from the Legions Imperialis rulebook – making it an indispensable resource for all Legions Imperialis players. Detachments for the new Legiones Astartes units seen below can also be found in this book.

Mastodon Super-heavy Assault Transports

One of the heaviest assault transports available to the Legiones Astartes, the Mastodon is several times the size of a Land Raider and able to carry over 40 Space Marines into the heart of combat. With its siege melta array it can obliterate fortifications, before disgorging its payload amongst the smouldering rubble, ready to claim their objective. This box contains two Mastodon Super-heavy Assault Transports, with a choice of Sponson Mounted lascannons or heavy bolters to go alongside its skyreaper battery and Sponson Mounted heavy flamers. It also contains a Legiones Astartes vehicle transfer sheet with 1130 decals.

Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyer Squadron

The flexible Spartan chassis was adapted to perform many different duties for the Legiones Astartes. The Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyer is one such configuration, armed with a neutron laser battery, a fearsome weapon from the Dark Age of Technology that tears apart armour even as it floods the interior of the tank with radiation. This box contains four Cerberus Heavy Tank Destroyers, each with a choice of Sponson Mounted lascannons or heavy bolters and Pintle Mounted heavy bolter or multi-melta. It also contains a Legiones Astartes vehicle transfer sheet with 1130 decals.

Typhon Heavy Siege Tank Squadron

Armed with a gigantic dreadhammer siege cannon, the Typhon is essentially a mobile gun platform, designed so that the Legions had the ability to rapidly deploy fortification-busting weapons with a speed beyond that provided by the batteries of the Imperial Army. This box contains four Typhon Heavy Siege Tanks, each with a choice of Sponson Mounted lascannons or heavy bolters and Pintle Mounted heavy bolter or multi-melta. It also contains a Legiones Astartes vehicle transfer sheet with 1130 decals.

Vindicator Siege Tank Squadron

The Vindicator is a siege tank armed with a powerful demolisher cannon, able to destroy enemy structures and heavy armour alike. Their compact size makes them perfect for deployment in cities and other enclosed battlefields that would hinder larger siege vehicles. This box contains eight Vindicator Siege Tanks, and a Legiones Astartes vehicle transfer sheet with 1130 decals.

Whirlwind and Scorpius Missile Tank Squadrons

Scorpius and Whirlwind tanks are both indirect fire artillery platforms, armed with missile launchers that can saturate areas of the battlefield with explosives. The Scorpius is equipped with armour piercing rockets, while the Whirlwind is designed to drive infantry out of heavy cover. This box contains four Scorpius Missile Tanks, four Whirlwind Missile Tanks, and a Legiones Astartes vehicle transfer sheet with 1130 decals.

Order Tokens and Objective Markers

Keep track of your Objectives and Orders on the battlefield with this set of 92 plastic tokens. This box contains 86 Order tokens – 20 First Fire, 20 Advance ,16 March, 16 Charge, and 14 Fall Back – alongside six Objective markers, denoting A, B, C, D, E, and F.

Formation and Datasheet Cards

Alongside Liber Strategia come three packs of Formation and datasheet cards to help you build your armies and reference your rules at the table. The Legiones Astartes card pack contains 47 datasheet cards including Detachment upgrades, and 17 Formation cards. The Solar Auxilia card pack contains 40 datasheet cards including Detachment upgrades, and 16 Formations. The Mechanicum card pack contains 39 datasheet cards including Detachment upgrades, and 27 Formation cards.

Gundabad™ Catapult Troll

When Azog needs to bring down the fortified walls of an enemy city, he will bring to bear the terrifying power of the Gundabad™ Catapult Trolls. Large war catapults crewed by Goblins from the Misty Mountains that are leashed to the back of hardy Trolls, these mobile siege machines can handily defend themselves in combat with their brutal strength. This Forge World resin miniature can be taken as an Independent Hero in an Army of Gundabad.

War Drakes of Rhûn™

Rhûnish War Drakes are a rare sight in Middle-earth, usually only seen when drawn into battle alongside the armies of Easterlings and Dragon Cult. Stockier and slower than other Dragons of Middle-earth, these territorial reptiles can easily snap a man’s arm in two with their powerful jaws, and the venom of their fangs leaves the wounded paralysed for later consumption. This pair of Forge World resin War Drakes of Rhûn can be used in The Easterlings and Host of the Dragon Emperor armies.
