Fellblades roll out – Five tanks in five Legion schemes

The fearsome Fellblade superheavy tank is a beast of a miniature – a mobile battle fortress that would come to cause havoc on the battlefields of the Horus Heresy. It’s the latest plastic kit to arrive in the Age of Darkness game system, and to celebrate, we asked five Legiones Astartes enthusiasts from the Warhammer Design Studio to paint theirs up.

Salamanders, by Adam

I've been using our in-studio Age of Darkness hobby challenges to build up an entire Salamanders army – and what Legion doesn't have a superheavy or two? I've always liked the colour scheme, the green with the black and fire motifs just add all those extra spot colours. I've explored using oil paints with this army, and I’ve been pushing the weathering on my tanks to give them a grounded, real-life feel.

Ultramarines, by Andy

I like metallic colour schemes on my Horus Heresy models, and the blue here is achieved by applying a black undercoat, followed by a Leadbelcher spray basecoat. I then use an airbrush to highlight the raised parts and the central areas of flat panels with Runefang Steel Air. Over this, I airbrushed Asurmen Blue Contrast, making a distinctive metallic blue finish.

Mindful that the Fellblade isn't on parade, I was sure to add plenty of scratches and a final layer of weathering using heavily watered-down Baneblade Brown. Finally, after all other elements were done I applied a gentle dusting of Zandri Dust spray, angled from below and slightly off to one side to give the effect of dust cast upwards onto the machine's flanks.

Word Bearers, by James

My Fellblade was painted to go along with my growing Word Bearers army. I used transfers from the Word Bearer Legion transfer sheet for the large flat panels, and after applying them I carefully trimmed them so that they fitted neatly in the spaces. With a little ingenuity, there are a lot of different things that can be done with all of the transfers on the sheet.

Thousand Sons, by Les

The Fellblade is one of my absolute favourite tanks! This mighty war machine is joining my force, the Cabal of the Seven Scorpions, and I knew from the start it would serve as a great centrepiece. While the Thousand Sons often favour esoteric, arcane patterns, as described in the Liber Hereticus, I chose instead to give my Fellblade a more uniform and disciplined appearance, reinforcing its role as both a weapon of war and a symbol of the Legion’s pride.

Imperial Fists, by Phil

I like big yellow tanks, so there was only one choice of scheme for the new plastic Fellblade. It had to be Imperial Fists. I always try to break up the yellow with elements of black. The combination is really eye-catching, especially on a gaming table. When I paint my models, I try to think about the stories and background behind them. I kept the weathering quite subtle, as it is easily overdone, and I didn't want to lose it under too much mud and damage…

Thanks, guys! The Fellblade is available to pre-order this weekend.
