World Championships Preview – Rule the Legions Imperialis battlefield with super-heavy tanks and Saturnine Terminators

There’ve been transport-loads of imposing new miniatures for the Age of Darkness in the news lately, and the Saturnine Terminators – not content with leading the charge in the new edition of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – are now barging their way onto the battlefields of Legions Imperialis.

Saturnine Heavy Assault Cadre

The Saturnine Heavy Assault Cadre packs all of Vulkan’s hulking experimental Terminator armour into a powerful armoured force, filling your detachments with the largest and toughest infantry available to the Legiones Astartes.

Not only do you get twelve Saturnine Terminator bases and two Saturnine Command squads, but also four massive Saturnine Dreadnoughts ready to lay down hefty fire support with either a heavy plasma bombard and disintegrator cannon or a graviton pulveriser and inversion beamer.

Araknae Weapons Platforms

They’re also joined by the Araknae-pattern Weapons Platforms, which come with a few new weapons not seen on the larger version.

Your set of eight Araknae platforms can be loaded up with the Quad-accelerator autocannon configuration, or swapped for your choice of a twin punisher cannon or a battery of Orias frag missiles. Each platform also has a 5+ invulnerable save, which makes them surprisingly tough on the deadly battlefields of Legions Imperialis where Titans roam free.

Saturnine Battle Group

Getting a head start with this heavy assault force couldn’t be easier – all the new kits above are collected together in the Saturnine Battle Group box, which also pairs them with a squadron of heavy vehicles.

You get two of the Saturnine Heavy Assault Cadre sets – for a total of 12 Terminator squads, four Command squads, and eight Dreadnoughts – with one set of eight Araknae platforms, eight Vindicator Siege Tanks, two Mastodon Super-heavy Assault Transports, and two Fire Raptors. All in all, it’s a wickedly durable army that is sure to outlast anything it doesn’t outright kill, and it also comes with four vehicle transfer sheets and a brand new aircraft transfer sheet.

We couldn’t just leave the heavy armour there, though. Where can an enterprising Praetor go from the sturdiest Terminators in the galaxy, if not right into the super-heavy motor pool?

Legion Super-heavy Tanks

The immense armour-busting Falchion rumbles into Legions Imperialis packing a devastating neutron wave cannon, which can punch right through Titan armour and slow vehicles down with shock pulses. Either tank in this set of two can instead be built as the new Ascalon variant, which mounts a Titan-sized Ascalon inferno gun capable of torching whole battalions of enemy infantry.

A second set of super-heavy tanks gives you the option of building a pair of Fellblade or Glaive tanks, with the former carrying a huge rapid-fire Fellblade accelerator cannon while the latter tackles lighter vehicles with a turret-mounted volkite carronade. Both sets come with vehicle transfer sheets, and each tank has the option of quad lascannon, quad heavy bolter, or laser destroyer sponsons.

If all of this armoured glory has you itching to try Legions Imperialis or planning the next expansion for your army, you can get a leg up with a pair of new Combined Arms Battle Group boxes for the Legiones Astartes and Solar Auxilia, each containing a curated collection of existing units that gives you a taste of everything Legions Imperialis has to offer.

Rules for all of the new Saturnine units, Araknae platforms, and many super-heavy tanks can be found in the upcoming Journal Strategia book, evocatively named The Ruin of the Salamanders. Tough times ahead for Vulkan’s sons, no doubt.

Journal Strategia: The Ruin of the Salamanders

This 48-page expansion book for Legions Imperialis returns to the black sands of Isstvan V for a detailed account of the annihilation of the Salamanders Legion during the Dropsite Massacre, with a new historical mission letting you play along and possibly save Vulkan’s sons from their fate. You’ll also get new Formations for Legiones Astartes armies, as well as new Iconic Formations for both the Space Marines and the Solar Auxilia.

That was a lot to get through, wasn’t it? We’re surrounded by epic-scale miniatures and still have loads to see from today’s Preview Show, so head back to the hub to discover everything else that’s being revealed today.
