Recently we revealed some brand new Combat Forces for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy – boxes that are ideal for starting a new army or expanding an existing one.
Through some act of Mechanicum wizardry that we dare not ask too much about, Combat Forces for its smaller-scale sibling Legions Imperialis have also emerged, and are heading for release extremely soon.
We were thinking about just repeating the previous Combat Force announcement in a smaller font, but it turns out the contents of each box are substantially different – for one, you get dozens of Epic Scale miniatures in each. Let’s check them out.
Legiones Astartes Combat Force
The Legiones Astartes need no introduction – the Loyalist and Traitor Legiones are the primary combatants during the Horus Heresy. Their combined arms approach and combat doctrine of shock and awe make great use of heavily armoured warriors and devastating war machines. Their Combat Force contains a wide range of iconic units, including Legion Terminators, Dreadnoughts, Rhinos, and even tanks, such as the Kratos and Sicaran.
For infantry, you get two Legion Command Squad bases, eight Legion Tactical Squad bases, two Legion Terminator bases, two Assault Marine bases, two Support Legionary bases, and two Heavy Support Legionary bases – more than enough ceramite to march forward and sit on objectives. They’re backed up by plenty of heavy support in the shape of four Legion Rapiers, four Tarantulas, four mighty Leviathan Siege Dreadnoughts, and four Contemptor Dreadnoughts. Finally, five Rhinos transport your Legionaries across the battlefield, protected by four Kratos Heavy Assault Tanks and four Sicaran Battle Tanks.
Mechanicum Combat Force
Far more esoteric than the Space Marines, the forces of the Taghmata Omnissiah wage war under the command of the high-ranking Archmagos Primes and their Tech-Priest subordinates, who bring to field armies that use cyborgs, thralls, automata, and war machines to eliminate their adversaries.
Two Archmagos Prime on Abeyant, two bases of Tech-Priests, two Myrmidon Secutor Hosts, four bases of Myrmidon Destructors, and 10 bases of Tech-thralls provide your core of cybernetic soldiers. They’re complemented by eight bases of Thallax Cohorts, four bases of Ursarax Cohorts, four bases of Castellax, four Thanatar with plasma mortars, four Thanatar with sollex heavy-las, two Domitar, two Arlatax, two Vultarax, and two Vorax. Two Triaros Armoured Conveyors ensure infantry survive the most dangerous of battlefields, and six Krios Battle Tanks make short work of enemy armour.
Solar Auxilia Combat Force
Where the Legiones Astartes and Mechanicum prefer elite forces and weaponry from another age, the Solar Auxilia bring disciplined cohorts and huge columns of tanks to the battlefield, finding strength in numbers.
Two Solar Auxilia Command bases, eight Auxilia bases, four bases of Auxilia with flamers, four Veletarii bases, and four bases of Charonite Ogryns provide a substantial infantry force for your army. Volume of firepower is the name of the game, and 12 Auxilia Tarantulas – split between lascannon batteries and hyperios air-defence missile launchers – plus 12 Auxilia Rapiers armed with a mix of quad launchers, laser destroyer arrays, and mole mortars give you plenty of high-powered armaments, alongside four remote Cyclops demolition vehicles. This box also contains a large complement of armoured vehicles, with eight ever-reliable Leman Russ tanks rumbling alongside three Dracosan Transports for your many, many infantry, and two almighty Auxilia Baneblades bristling with guns.
These boxes are multi-purpose too. They’re all a perfect point to start an army from, an excellent addition to an existing force, or a great selection of bits to start an Allied Detachment with – so you can create epic armies for Legions Imperialis, or fill in some tactical gaps if you need to. They’ll be coming to pre-order in short order.
