Legions Imperialis designer’s notes – How the Liber Strategia shakes up the whole game

The Liber Strategia is a new supplement for Legions Imperalis that every fan of the game is going to be interested in. Here’s James from the Horus Heresy team to tell us more.

The Liber Strategia is the crucial companion for every general. It compiles every army list for Legions Imperialis in a single book, including all the additional lists, detachments, and formations published in The Great Slaughter, The Devastation of Tallarn, and The Rise of the Dark Mechanicum – alongside a whole host of new material.

The first and most obvious addition is that of several new Detachments for the Legiones Astartes, including Vindicators in the armour slot, the addition of Artillery Detachments in the Whirlwind and Scorpius Missile Tanks, and several new Heavy Armour options in the Typhon, Cerberus, and Mastodon.

We’ve also rearranged and updated many elements of the army lists. Some changes are relatively simple: Legiones Astartes tank commanders move into the HQ Detachments slot, while several types of vehicle, such as Malcadors and Leman Russ Battle Tanks, are separated into individual Detachments.

We’ve taken the opportunity to look at every Detachment and make some minor adjustments – especially to those that were over or underperforming. Changes might be as simple as new points costs, but many have seen adjustments to the characteristic profiles or their weapons. For instance, the Contemptor Dreadnought’s Kheres assault cannon gains an additional dice, making it a more interesting choice compared with the twin lascannon.

Plasma guns have undergone an overhaul, too: they lost 2” from their range but gained the Assault trait, making them significantly more deadly up close. Many Titans and Knights have seen significant points drops, as well as adjustments to Ion Save characteristics, while Armigers are now a Detachment of their own. Pintle weapons are now represented by profiles of their own.

Our final update is a reformat of what were previously called Formations of Legend. These are now called Iconic Formations and they encompass more than just special characters and infamous units – though those still exist.

Many of the new Iconic Formations offer unique special rules to existing units. These include the Solar Auxilia Solar Pattern Cohort, which provides large numbers of Veletaris mounted in Dracosans backed up by elite commanders, and the Legion Stonebreaker Siege Force, which combines the new Vindicators and Whirlwinds with Legion Infantry to assault structures.

Alongside these, you can expect to see legendary Formations such as the Theta-Garmon ‘Deathless’ Sub-Cohort and the White Scars Chogorian Warband. These open up exciting new opportunities for additional content in the future…

Thanks, guys! The Liber Strategia will arrive for pre-order soon.
