White Dwarf explores the design of Warhammer Quest: Darkwater in issue 519

Warhammer Quest: Darkwater is a few weeks from release, and this month’s issue of White Dwarf features a bumper crop of articles on the game, alongside all the regular features you’ve come to expect and love. Grab yourself a cuppa, and join us as we flick through the contents.

A new Warhammer Quest is always a big deal, and Darkwater is no different. We’ve covered the game extensively, but it’s impossible to be exhaustive and so you can tuck into a banquet of articles that includes a commentary on the game from one of its developers, a rundown of the heroes and villains from the miniatures designers, a thrilling narrative playthrough of the first act, and a guide on how to paint some of the heroes ready for your first game.

The ’Eavy Metal team are on hand to dispense even more painting advice as they run through all the recipes used on the whole Helsmiths of Hashut range, from Urak Taar’s bronze taurus, to the skin of the Bull Centaurs, and the additional colour schemes for Ur-Zorn, Zharr Vyxa, and Muspelzharr.

There is also a staff showcase that exhibits many of the near-infinite colours displayed by the regiments of the Astra Militarum. Alongside some truly awesome armies, there are tips on how to create your own regiments, paint recipes for certain colours featured, and a follow-up gallery of one-off units and tanks to demonstrate how variety can be represented on a smaller scale.

The Warhammer Design Studio also got in the festive spirit to create some fun Christmas-themed conversions and paint schemes. With 2026 just around the corner, the New Year, New Army article shows you how to pick a new Warhammer 40,000 army. The issue also covers how to come up with a narrative for them, and how to take some popular Combat Patrols and expand them into full armies.

On top of all that, the second instalment of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Tale of Four Warlords is here, alongside a lore digest on the Emperor and his Golden Throne, plus all the usual content from the bunker. Each issue comes with your Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Age of Sigmar scenarios of the month and a 2026 Bunker Bingo card to track painting and gaming goals in the new year.
