Community painted Leagues of Votann miniatures stake a claim on our attention

Kinhosts around the galaxy eagerly await reinforcements sanctioned by the Ancestors, providing them with new ways to claim and hold yields in the pursuit of prosperity. The new Leagues of Votann miniatures will be available for pre-order tomorrow, and we sent out a few advance scouting parties to painters around the community. Here’s what we got back from our intrepid Kin.

Kalvin has painted up a selection of the new kits with a saturated turquoise colouring evoking the Greater Thurian League, but with a little more punch that will definitely help them stand out on the battlefield when they’re stepping over the corpses of Tyranids.

Many Leagues exist across the galaxy, and while their organisational structure may be rigidly followed, each has its own proudly worn livery. Snikch from the La Voz de Horus podcast gives us a glimpse of a crisp white colour scheme that emphasises their clean design language.

Matt from Sprues and Brews has opted for the standard Greater Thurian League colour scheme, and painted everything from the new release in time for the article – no mean feat, but as any kin will tell you, toil earns.

Both Ben Mudge and Adrian Phillips have taken their own spin on the new, improbably tenacious hero Buri Aegnirssen. Known as the Thrice-devoured due to his rather unfortunate encounters with the Tyranids, he nevertheless looks fantastic despite being bathed in digestive acid. Lloyd Davies also treats us to a pristine take on the Kapricus in the bold black and red of the Ymyr Conglomerate – what a swish looking ride.

Finally, Vincent Knotley has worked his usual Contrast magic on three Ironkin Steeljacks. He also provided us with some insight into working on the recipes. Take it away, Knotley:

“One of my colour schemes essentially began as a mistake on the Theyn – as I work with Contrast paints to base, shade, and layer in a single application, I always try to work from the darkest colours to the lightest. I started painting a greyish blue on the thighs and right forearm, and I’d planned to add a very small hint of Kroxigor Scales into a thinned down coat of Stormfiend to make it a little punchier. I actually picked the wrong colour, adding Aeldari Emerald instead. Here’s the thing, though – it worked, contrasting well with the yellow. After accenting this with a ghostly green head, and orange Autoch-pattern bolter, I experimented my way into one of my new favourite ever colour schemes.

My original plan for the blue Steeljack was to match the Greater Thurian League colour scheme but using a monochromatic blue scheme. I applied the darker blue first with two thinned applications of Talassar Blue over Grey Seer and decided to leave the upper armour, pauldron, and concussion gauntlet white due to the impact it had.

Green and pink sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, and given that I’d not used either on the rest of the unit, I couldn’t resist. Around a core of Mantis Warriors Green mixed with a hint of Ironjawz Yellow, I added in a darker pink cloth for wraps around the feet and shoulders to frame the bright green. By adding white for the bolter casings and collar to add in some neutral definition, I’ve got an Ironkin Steeljack that will never go missing on the battlefield.”

Thanks for that, Knotley – and thanks as well to everyone who took part. You can pre-order the new Leagues of Votann miniatures tomorrow, alongside the Codex and new Combat Patrol box.
