Grotmas Calendar Day 10 – Unleash the Great Wolf in a ferocious new Space Wolves Detachment

The Space Wolves are renowned for their epic deeds worthy of great sagas, and few in the history of the Imperium have spawned as many as Logan Grimnar. The Great Wolf is a warrior and leader without comparison, and he’s the focus of the sixth and final new Detachment springing from the Grotmas Calendar this year.

It should come as no surprise that Da Red Gobbo made himself scarce the moment the howls of Morkai were heard, but he left behind some notes from the Warhammer Studio. Let’s see what they have to say about the new Detachment.

Saga of the Great Wolf

When the Great Wolf Logan Grimnar himself leads his packs to war, it is certain that mighty deeds will be done and epic verses added to the sagas of many a Space Wolf. There is none amongst the sons of Russ who can command such instinctive authority amongst his Chapter, none who so deftly wields warrior and war engine like a single great pack. In the sight of their lord, every Space Wolf aspires to be a champion of Fenris and strives with ever-greater determination to prove themselves worthy of his regard. Under the command of some lesser warlord, this surging ferocity and competitive ebullience might risk degenerating into ill-disciplined mayhem, but not under the leadership of Logan Grimnar. He masterfully directs the hunt from its very heart, maintaining a relentless flow of commands and orchestrating every element of the battle like an apex predator herding its prey to destruction. Where restraint is needed, he sees it exercised. Where focused fury must be unleashed, he is its master and embodiment both. So do the Space Wolves claim victory no matter the foe, and so does the saga of Logan Grimnar grow ever greater for the telling.

This Detachment is open to all Space Wolves armies, but it certainly encourages you to use Logan Grimnar himself.  There are 3 once per game Hunting Packs that buff your whole army for that turn. Either re-roll advances/charges, +1 to hit for shooting or in Melee your weapons have Lethal Hits/Sustained Hits 1. If you have taken Logan Grimnar, you can use one of the Hunting Packs an additional time.

The Enhancements give a range of benefits, a Wolf Guard Battle Leader can give his unit Lance, you can redeploy 3 units, a Wolf Priest can force battleshock tests in the fight phase, and finally a Terminator Captain can lead Wolfguard Terminators as well as Rapid ingress for free.

The Stratagems are more focused on utility. You have the ability to put any of your units into a Hunting Pack, Mounted or Walker units (which Space Wolves have a lot of) can move through terrain and models,  Adeptus Astartes units can charge in a turn the fall-back (Space Wolves units can also charge if the advanced), you can make a normal move after a Space Wolves unit has been shot. Offensively you have a strat for +1 to wound with your ranged attacks. Defensively you can reduce the AP of incoming enemy attacks.
