Gather round, young pups, for the great sagas of the Space Wolves

The first wave of the new Space Wolves is up for pre-order this weekend, and as the howls of Fenrisian wolves get ever closer, we’re taking a cosy night in from the biting cold to reacquaint ourselves with their glorious history – with a stack of Black Library novels.

It makes sense to start with the classics, and the three novels that make up the Space Wolf Omnibus by William King have just been announced in a slick new Special Edition. This trilogy serves as the origin story and later exploits of one Ragnar Blackmane, the legendary Wolf Lord, beginning with his induction into the Chapter in the appropriately named Space Wolf.

Ragnar’s Claw continues the saga with a sprawling epic that features Aeldari artifacts, Ork hordes, and a few daemons for good measure – a real who’s who of the 41st Millennium. Then, Grey Hunter tells the tale of Ragnar’s pursuit of the stolen Spear of Russ, which sends his company into the arms of a Chaos ambush and has dire consequences for the Space Wolves as a whole.

The Young Wolf’s story doesn’t end there. The events of Grey Hunter propel him into a web of intrigue as part of a Navigator House’s bodyguard in Wolfblade – also by William King – which takes Ragnar all the way to Terra itself.

He and his Wolfblade pack are sent to head off a Chaos incursion in Sons of Fenris by Lee Lighter, only to find their ancient rivals, the Dark Angels, keen to ignite old feuds. No sooner is the crisis resolved than the Thousand Sons launch an all-out attack on the Space Wolves in Wolf’s Honour, forcing Ragnar to take up the Spear of Russ and reclaim his honour by cutting the heart from the heretic assault.

The trials and tribulations of Járnhamar Pack are an equally great way to spend time among the sons of Russ. The omnibus Legends of the Wolf collects three novels and a short story – Blood of Asaheim, Stormcaller, The Helwinter Gate, and Kraken by Chris Wraight – that follow these battle brothers across the galaxy as they face foes from both without and within, testing the limits of their bond and showing why the men of Fenris make such fantastic Space Marines.

Finally, immerse yourselves in the myriad tales of the Chapter’s greatest champions in Sagas of the Space Wolves, a massive collection of 16 separate stories starring luminaries as Arjac Rockfist, Logan Grimnar, and more.

These epic sagas should give you plenty to chew on while you wait for the Space Wolf pre-orders to arrive this weekend, and make sure you don’t miss out on your chance to get the new Codex: Space Wolves first in the Space Wolves army set.
