Last week we started our dive into the deep, deep ocean of lore found in the Black Books, the venerable tomes that fleshed out the vast narrative of Warhammer: The Horus Heresy for years before the Age of Darkness box arrived.
They’re foundational texts, and expand on everything from epic campaigns to small details and vignettes. Our current focus is on the Night Lords, a Legion infamous for their use of terror tactics, including – but not limited to – wearing the flayed skin of their enemies as trophies.

Fresh from a decisive victory in the Isstvan sector, the Night Lords returned home to replenish and restock before starting out on their first major operation in the Horus Heresy. The Thramas Crusade might not be talked about in the same hushed tones as Isstvan, but it was a long and bloody campaign that shaped the Eastern Fringe.
The Konrad Curze that waged this campaign was a shadow of his former self, plagued by nightmarish visions, and the cold and clinical terror tactics practiced by his Legion quickly descended into outright massacres as parts of the Night Haunter’s domain began to defy the Night Lords. Into this hellish scene, the Dark Angels arrived, and we’ll stop here because you’ll want to read how the Thramas Crusade unfolds for yourself in this free 56-page PDF, originally published in Book Nine – Crusade back in 2020.
Next week we’ll continue our exploration of the Night Lords and the Thramas Crusade.
