Huron Blackheart has been reaving his way through Warhammer Community lately, and now he’s casting his net even further as White Dwarf comes under assault from the fearsome space pirates of the Maelstrom in Issue 522. Red Corsairs and Aeldari battle for prominence across its pages, and all the rest of us can do is bask in their magnificence.*
In short, a great time all around.

The action kicks off with a vicious close-quarters Boarding Actions game as Huron himself and his Masters of the Maelstrom fight to expel Aeldari Corsairs from their ship. Studio painter Harvey’s lavishly converted Corsairs won’t be easy to shift, though, as they’re led by Prince Erandael – using the rules for the new Prince Yriel – and are adept at using the ship’s movement-blocking hatchways to their advantage.
The Battle Report is then followed by a hobby showcase looking at how Harvey’s Sunblitz Brotherhood came to be, and the intricate conversions that are a hallmark of her bright and colourful army across its infantry, tanks, and heroes.

For all their raiding and pillaging, the greatest danger these void-faring pirates face is often the journey itself, as the Warp is a frighteningly inhospitable place where even the slightest slip might damn an entire crew’s souls to eternal torment – if they’re lucky. To make sure you’re well prepared for your next foray into the stars, Warhammer 40,000 writer Tom takes us on an in-depth exploration of Warp travel and the other ways that factions move around the galaxy, from Webway gates to slipstream drives.

You can hardly be a self-respecting pirate captain without some form of animal companion sitting on your shoulder and staring menacingly at your adversaries, but if you’re still paralysed by choice, the White Dwarf Creature Feature has your back. What started as a small event for the UK’s National Pet Day has ballooned into a full-on pageant, and some of the greatest ‘little guys’ from across the Warhammer team are on full display.

Elsewhere in this issue, the Great Necromancer, Nagash, has pulled forces from across Grand Alliance Death together into a mighty, all-encompassing Army of Renown – with himself at the head of course – while the chronicles of Sergeant Bain continue with the third instalment of his serialised tale.
