Over the past few weeks we’ve been going on a journey through those grand repositories of Horus Heresy lore known to fans as the Black Books, starting with the Night Lords and their sadistic crusade across the Thramas system. We’ve learned everything there is to know about the campaign and the worlds it was fought on, so now we’re moving on to examine the Legiones Astartes in detail – starting with the dour and secretive Dark Angels who defended Thramas* against Konrad Curze’s villainous terror squads.

Led by their Primarch Lion El’Jonson, the Dark Angels are often held up as the pinnacle of what it means to be a Space Marine, mastering all the ways of war and standing steadfast in the defence of the Imperium. Though not the most cheerful of sorts and prone to bouts of extreme secrecy, the legacy of the First Legion afforded them great respect and the honour of safeguarding many of Humanity’s most horrific weapons.
Rumours and whispers even claimed that the Lion was equally suitable for the job of Warmaster as his brother Horus, if not more so – though such open sedition against the Emperor’s infallible wisdom was never uttered out loud. There are a chunky 36 pages to read through from 2020’s Book Nine – Crusade, so keep your candle close and learn all there is to know before the Dark Angels seal the scrolls away.**
Next week we continue with the Loyalist Legions by taking a trip to the moon of Baal Secundus and the home of the illustrious Blood Angels. At least now that we’re leaving the Dark Angels behind, we don’t have to worry about Loyalists with tragic secrets… do we?
* You thought we couldn’t sneak in one more link to the Thramas Crusade before leaving? Think again!
** And you too, most likely.
