Four contestants test their creativity to make Rogue Traders and retinues on Scrap Demon

We don’t know about you, but here in the Warhammer Community team we’re almost buried under a glorious heap of new miniatures that we got for Christmas. With such a huge pile of potential at our fingertips, we’re wondering if we should throw caution to the wind and kitbash something crazy.*

Finding inspiration in a big stack of sprues is the name of the game on Scrap Demon too. The show pits four contestants against each other, challenging them to create something really cool out of a big selection of sprues in order to impress our judge and win the coveted Scrap Demon trophy.

The challenge for this week’s episode is to create a Rogue Trader and retinue. We caught up with contestants Ben and Ollie to ask what goes through the mind when sitting in front of a daunting mound of plastic, with a singular task at hand.

Ollie: What do you do when faced with a massive pile of sprues? Honestly you can't go wrong! Personally, I like to look for specific parts that I find exciting rather than trying to make a concrete plan – wings, funky helmets, super cool weapons, etc. Being an Iron Hands lover, any sort of robotic limb or cybernetic part will definitely be sought after! I'm of the belief that if you gather up enough awesome parts, a cool converted scrap masterpiece will create itself.

Not to say that you shouldn't have some kind of vague plan, but you definitely don't need one to make something epic... or, several epic things! I've watched loads of Scrap Demon episodes before, but was pleasantly surprised to discover that rather than create one big model, we had to create a whole squad instead. This meant I was even less worried about having a strong plan as I had six attempts to make something awesome. Throw enough things at the wall and eventually something will stick... Just don't forget the plastic glue!

Ben: Clearly what you don’t do is just charge headlong in there, excitedly grabbing as many bits as you can because they look cool, or happen to be within reach, and then hope for the best! No sir, that’s not me. I’m a very meticulous planner…

Alright, this is a lie. Plans lead to things like following instructions or knowing where you’re going, and they don’t lead to Chaos. No, I prefer to sail more whimsical seas. Bring on the Warp, bring on the wonkiness, bring on the last-minute adrenaline rush that leads to desperate action!

Thankfully, the aim of this episode was for us to make a whole crew of kitbashed spacefarers who thrive outside the bounds of the Imperium’s norms. This left me loads of license for creating whatever weird brain-spawn I could, but one component made all the difference – the cat from the Saviours of Cinderfall kit!

Ship’s felids must still be about in the 41st Millennium, right? I bet they’re valuable too. A perfect statement piece for my Rogue Trader…

You’ll have to tune in to this week’s episode of Scrap Demon to find out how things worked out, and see some extremely cool Rogue Trader crews in the process!

That’s not all there is on Warhammer TV this week. On Loremasters, Alex provides us with a comprehensive overview of the Indomitus Crusade, covering the vast fleets brought together in order to fight back against the many threats that have beset Imperium Sanctus, and the trials and tribulations they’ve gone through. It’s a great way of getting caught up with what has been going on in the galaxy, ahead of the mysterious events currently unfolding.

Finally, if you’re looking for some discussion on the nuts and bolts of the game of Warhammer 40,000, then you can tune in to Victory Pointers, where Warhammer TV’s Joshua sits down with game developer Josh (that’s not going to get confusing…) to chat about the intricacies of Primary and Secondary Missions. We’re sure it’s going to be an objective discussion. Ahem.

Everything mentioned above is available to watch on Warhammer TV right now – alongside more than 600 other episodes of Warhammer shows and animations – for anyone with a Warhammer+ subscription.
