‘Eavy Metal at Warhammer Fest
Beautifully sculpted and painted miniatures are at the heart of the Games Workshop hobby, and there’s nothing quite like seeing a great paint job in person, or chatting with an experienced painter about how you can nail that elusive painting technique.
Most of Games Workshop’s painters will be heading to Coventry over May 27th and 28th for Warhammer Fest and the Golden Demon painting competition, so we caught up with ‘Eavy Metal painter and multiple Golden Demon winner Max Faleij, and Golden Demon coordinator Helen Whetton to ask them why Warhammer Fest is a painter’s perfect event, and to discover some of what’s planned.
Max: Warhammer Fest is one of the highlights of the year for me. The enthusiasm and collective talent that comes together over those two days is amazing to be a part of.
Working the ‘Eavy Metal stand at Warhammer Fest is always loads of fun. I get to meet a lot of great people and talk painting non-stop all day! This year, the ‘Eavy Metal team will be at Warhammer Fest in force – we have so much cool stuff planned! Everything from giant collections of the most recently released miniatures, to personal displays of miniatures we’ve painted ourselves. We’ll be happy to get stuck in to any painting related conversations, offering tips, tricks, feedback etc.
Helen: Warhammer Fest, for me, is usually viewed from behind paperwork and glass cabinets! I’ve been involved with organising the Golden Demon painting competition for 10 years, and it’s really been an honour and pleasure to see all the outstanding miniatures painted by some of the most talented painters from around the world.
It’s also been amazing to see the younger generations develop as great painters, from their first Youngblood entries to being mature Golden Demon winners. I now recognise quite a few names and faces who are at every event.
Max: Oh yes. We usually see people flying in from around the world, bringing amazing pieces along for the competition. The Golden Demon Painting Competition is one of the world’s longest running miniature painting events, 2017 is its 30th year, and Darren Latham has been hard at work updating and perfecting the categories and rules. Even adding the new ‘Eavy Metal Paint Masters category! It definitely feels like it’s going to be a special year!
Helen: Seeing all of those inspiring miniatures in one place is a hobbyist’s dream. My only disappointment is that I don’t get more time to stare at them, as I’m busy making sure we give the right Golden Demon awards to the right people!
Max: It’s not all about the awards; whatever level of painting people are at, we’ve got something for them at Warhammer Fest. Anyone out there with painting related questions… this is the perfect time to get the answers you’ve been looking for!
The ‘Eavy Metal team have loads of live painting demonstrations and seminars planned to go into the Demo Pods schedule, and Max has revealed a couple of them:
- Livery of Corruption – Painting the Death Guard.
Tips, tricks and ‘Eavy Metal Painting Demonstration of Death Guard Chaos Space Marines.
- Insignium Astartes – Space Marine Honour Markings.
An ‘Eavy Metal seminar on the theory and application of Space Marine markings.
- Beasts of the Realm – Painting patterns, textures and fur.
Tips, tricks and ‘Eavy Metal Painting Demonstration on how to paint different natural patterns and textures on fantasy creatures.
Max and Helen are clearly passionate about miniature painting, and overall, Warhammer Fest is a great place to come together with people that share that passion. Whether you’re planning to enter Golden Demon, just come to get inspired by the awesome talent on display, or get advice from the experts (or all of that!) this is one event you don’t want to miss!
